DETERMINING WHAT SERVICES WE PERFORM

To determine what weatherization measures we may perform, a certified Energy Auditor visits the home to assess its characteristics.

The auditor inputs the gathered information into our energy audit program. The program then provides information to the auditor about whether the proposed work is cost-effective enough to complete. These may include:

Attic and Wall Insulation
Replacement or Repair of:
- Furnace
- Water Heater
- Refrigerator/Freezer
Lighting
Ventilation
Air Sealing

Any weatherization measure being installed requires enough future energy savings to pay for its cost. This means that some measures, such as window and door replacements, commonly cannot be performed.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?

To qualify for Weatherization Services, customers must first participate in the WI Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP). To be eligible for WHEAP, you must be at or below the following income guidelines:

STEP 2: APPLY WITH WEATHERIZATION SERVICES

Once approved by Energy Assistance, you can now apply with Weatherization Services. Be sure to complete all forms, sign and return all requested information to prevent delays. You may apply in person, by mail, email, fax or request an application.

STEP 3: HOME INSPECTION

Once you apply, you will be placed on our waiting list for services. When your home is next on the list, an auditor from our agency will call to schedule an appointment to look over your home.

As part of the inspection, the auditors will be looking at characteristics of the house, taking measurements, and asking questions about the home. They will be looking at things such as your furnace, hot water heater, refrigerator/freezer for efficiency, any health and safety issues in the home and attic/wall insulation.

Upon return to the office, the data collected will be entered into a state required computer program that will assist the auditors in determining what services we can provide to help reduce energy usage in your home.

STEP 4: LET THE WORK BEGIN!

Once the auditors have completed inputting the data collected into the computer program, they will have a list of things we can do to save you energy and money! You will be notified of these findings and will be asked to sign an authorization for us to complete work in your home.

Usually one to three months following the audit, you will receive calls from the weatherization agency staff and contractors to schedule the final steps in making your home more comfortable and energy efficient!

ENERGY SAVING TIPS

The first step to lowering utility bills is becoming aware of how you use energy. Estimates range, but typical single-family homes spend up to 45% of their utility expenditures on heating and cooling, 16% on water heating, and 13% on lighting. It is easy to see that small changes in those areas will affect your utility usage.

The Wisconsin Home Energy Plus Low-Income Weatherization Program helped reduce home energy costs for 6,784 households by reducing home energy consumption. Our program improves the energy efficiency of homes by using some of the most advanced technologies, testing equipment, highly trained crews, vetted contractors and safety protocols available in the housing industry. Households participating in the program can save $500 each year on average. As a result of participation in the program, customer homes are more comfortable—warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer.
